The present invention provides compositions and formulations for storing viral vectors, and uses of these compositions and formulations. In particular, particular embodiments relate to compositions and formulations of trehalose or derivatives thereof as protective agents suitable for long-term storage of viral vectors and both in vitro and in vivo applications. Thus, in certain embodiments, an aqueous solution comprising (a) a viral vector, (b) about 3% to about 15% by weight trehalose or a derivative thereof, and (c) a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent. A composition is provided. In one embodiment, the viral vector is an adenoviral vector. In another embodiment, the viral vector is an adeno-associated viral vector. In yet another embodiment, the viral vector is a retroviral vector.
