Provided are: an insect repellent that has high repelling effect on harmful insects and excellent durability but yet shows lower toxicity to humans, animals, agricultural crops, etc., causes no soil contamination and can be easily used and an insect repelling method. As active ingredients, at least one compound selected from among cyclic monoterpene alcohols and/or at least one compound selected from among cyclic monoterpene ketones are combined with at least one compound selected from among cyclic sesquiterpenes. To these active ingredients that are either used as such or impregnated into or mixed with an appropriate carrier, additive(s) are optionally added. The thus obtained mixture is formulated into a repellent in the form of a solid preparation, oil solution (liquid preparation), emulsion, wettable powder, paste, gel, aerosol, microcapsules, etc. and used by any means selected from among spraying, scattering, application, volatilization and fumigation.
