A method comprises the steps of: providing a first surgical instrument comprising a surface having a mating element； connecting the first surgical instrument with a fastener, connecting the fastener with tissue； engaging the mating element with a mating element of at least one of a plurality of alternate second surgical instruments interchangeable with the first surgical instrument； and treating the spine with the first surgical instrument and the at least one second surgical instrument.
