The invention provides novel compounds that are derivatives of Azithromycin and that have been found by the current inventors to have low antimicrobial activity but significant epithelial barrier enhancement properties. The invention further provides use of the compounds as a medicament, in particular in the treatment or prophylaxis of a disease or condition that is caused by a defect in epithelial cells or tissue, or a disease or condition that benefits from enhancement or restoration of epithelial barrier function, for example diseases of the respiratory tract.La présente invention concerne de nouveaux composés qui sont des dérivés d'azithromycine et qui s'avèrent avoir une faible activité antimicrobienne mais des propriétés significatives d'amélioration de la barrière épithéliale. L'invention concerne en outre l'utilisation des composés comme médicament, en particulier dans le traitement ou la prophylaxie d'une maladie ou d'un état qui est provoqué par un défaut dans les cellules épithéliales ou un tissu, ou une maladie ou un état qui bénéficie de l'amélioration ou de la restauration de la fonction de barrière épithéliale, par exemple des maladies du tractus respiratoire.
