An ambulatory infusion device (1) comprises an audio encoder (12) connected to an electro-acoustic transducer (11). The audio encoder (12) is configured to generate an acoustically reproducible encoding of numerical values by representing each digit with a sequence of successive notes of a musical scale (2). The number of notes in the sequence corresponds to the number value of the respective digit. Subsequently, the numerical values are signaled via the electro-acoustic transducer (11) using the generated encoding. Representing a numerical digit with a sequence of successive notes of a musical scale, where the number of notes in the sequence corresponds to the number value of the digit, has the advantage that numerical values can be acoustically signaled to a user in a very intuitive fashion, enabling users with a visual impairment to easily and intuitively program and operate the ambulatory infusion device (1).
