Disclosed is a beverage making system and a method for forming a beverage. The beverage making system comprises a beverage precursor liquid supply (10), a cartridge chamber (3), and a carbon dioxide activating fluid supply. The beverage precursor liquid supply (10) is arranged to provide a precursor liquid (2). The cartridge chamber is arranged to hold a single cartridge comprising a first (4a) and second (4b) chamber that are separated by an impermeable element. The first chamber contains a carbon dioxide source (41) and the second chamber contains a beverage medium (42). The carbon dioxide source is arranged to emit carbon dioxide gas and may comprise a solid zeolite material comprising adsorbed carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide activating fluid supply is arranged to provide fluid to the cartridge chamber for contact with the carbon dioxide source. The cartridge chamber is arranged to receive carbon dioxide gas that exits the first chamber, and further arranged to cause the beverage medium to exit the second chamber. The system being arranged to carbonate the precursor liquid using the carbon dioxide gas emitted and to mix the beverage medium of the second cartridge with the precursor liquid.
