The foods and supplements are used for delaying the onset of, slowing the progression of, and/or ameliorating at least one symptom of, metabolic syndrome, type I diabetes, type II diabetes, pancreatic disease or hyperlipidemia. The mixture of glucomannan, xanthan gum and alginate is analysed using standard methods of carbohydrate analysis involving acid hydrolysis of the polysaccharides followed by chromatographic separation.
