A tape measure comprises a tape 2 and a plurality of clips 12, 22 for attachment to the tape 2 to record the positions of measurements that have been made. The clips 12, 22 may be attached by folding the clips about an edge of the tape 2 and passing connecting parts of the clips through holes 10 at pre-defined positions along the tape 2. The clips may comprise fixed clips 12 that can be permanently attached to the tape 2 to record an initial measurement or a target measurement; and movable clips 22 that can be releasably attached to the tape 2 to temporarily record intermediate measurements. The clips 12, 22 may further comprise receiving means for the connecting parts that allow one clip to be attached "piggyback" to another clip (see figs. 6, 7).
