A suture 10 comprises an elongate flexible body formed by a braided or woven multiple stranded member 20 having first and second ends, a plurality of frustoconical, tissue-engaging elements 45, 46 received upon the body, and a plurality of knots tied in the body 20. Each element 45, 46 defines an enlarged hollow interior having a tapered lumen including a forward bore at a narrow end of the tapered lumen and enlarging outwardly toward a broader end of the tapered lumen. The knots are larger than the bore of the elements 45, 46 and maintain the elements 45, 46 serially on the body 20.
