The main objective of the present invention is to develop a pharmaceutical excipient through chemical grafting with improved mucoadhesive property to be used in gastroretentive technology. The present invention is used for modification of naturally available Cordia myxa gum obtained from partially ripe fruits of Cordia myxa, known as lasuda in hindi language. Modification by acrylamide grafting using ceric ammonium nitrate as free radical initiator was done. The mucoadhesive effect of modified Cordia myxa gum became more pronounced than mucoadhesive properties of unmodified Cordia myxa gum. Objective of the present invention is to propose a simple, cost effective process to modify the physico-chemical properties of Cordia myxa gum in order to replace synthetic polymers used for gastroretention of formulations. The modification of Cordia myxa gum in the present invention shows enhanced mucoadhesion properties, when compared to native Cordia myxa or other synthetic polymers.
