A formulation or pair of formulations is provided comprising a hair retention promoting substance and an enzyme (peptidase or lipase) and having exfoliating activity when applied to the human scalp. The substance and enzyme are present in an aqueous carrier having a pH that maintains the activity of the enzyme.
