Systems, methods and apparatus are provided for applying fertilizer during a planting operation. Embodiments include a seed firmer having a liquid application conduit for injecting liquid into the sidewall of a trench. In some such embodiments, the seed firmer includes structure for opening a side trench in the sidewall of the trench； liquid is then injected into the resulting side trench.
