The present invention relates to an antioxidant or cell-protecting composition containing a novel hydroquinone compound isolated from a lacquer extract. A novel compound Wonjuquinol A or B isolated from the lacquer extract shows biological activities in increasing expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2/antioxidant responsive element (Nrf2/ARE). Thus, the composition containing the compounds as an active ingredient or natural substances which are derived from lacquer trees and contain the same can be used for protecting cells against oxidative stress in an effective way.
