Described herein is the surprising discovery that ketone bodies protect celland tissues from ionizing radiation. Basedon this finding, methods of protecting animal tissue and cells from damagecaused by radiation exposure are disclosed whichinclude, contacting the tissue with a therapeutically effective amount of anagent including at least one ketone ester, thereby protectingthe tissue from radiation damage. Ketone esters can be used to minimize,reduce and/or prevent tissue damage following intentionaland accidental radiation exposure, as well as increasing the therapeuticefficacy of radiation therapies by protecting non-target tissuefrom incidental radiation damage.
