A multi-purpose phacoemulsification needle is provided. The multi-purposephacoemulsification needle comprises a needle body disposed about a centerlineand a lumenintegral to the needle body along the centerline. The lumen includes a primarysurface and a firstinternal diameter. The multi-purpose phacoemulsification needle furthercomprises a proximal endadapted for attachment to a phacoemulsification handpiece. The lumen includesat least three finshaving isolated distal ends protruding inwardly from the primary surface ofthe lumen, the finsconfigured such that the distal ends of the fins create a second diameter thatis less than 50% ofthe first internal diameter, wherein each of the at least three fins has alongitudinal extent alongthe centerline that is greater than the first internal diameter.
