PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gel-based livestock feed and use thereof.SOLUTION: The present invention provides a method for weaving piglets by feeding young piglets for up to 7 days directly after weaning a gel feed containing nutrients. In one embodiment, the piglets at the date of weaning are less than 10 pounds in weight, and at least one of the nutrients comprises protein derived from blood. The present invention also provides a livestock feed including an alginate-based gel matrix in which water is the major component and protein is derived from blood, such as plasma or serum.
