An absorbent article containing a liquid-impervious substrate having a body-facing surface and a clothing-facing surface, and on the body-facing surface there is a composition of skin adhesive and absorbent gel for attaching the substrate directly to the user and for absorbing body fluids. 2. An absorbent article according to claim 1, wherein the composition of the skin adhesive and absorbent gel is capable of absorbing at least about 20% of its weight in water. The absorbent article of claim 1, wherein the composition of skin adhesive and absorbent gel comprises airgel. The absorbent article of claim 1, wherein the composition of skin adhesive and absorbent gel comprises a hydrogel. The absorbent article of claim 4, wherein the hydrogel consists of monomers selected from the group consisting of acrylates, vinyls, amides, esters and mixtures thereof. The absorbent article of claim 4, wherein the hydrogel is formed from a precursor composition comprising a monomer, initiator, crosslinking agent and solvent. The absorbent article of claim 4, wherein the hydrogel has a three-dimensional crosslinked structure. The absorbent article of claim 4, wherein the hydrogel is interwoven with fibrous material. The absorbent article of claim 1, wherein the skin adhesive and absorbent gel composition consists of a multilayer structure with a first layer for attaching the substrate to the user and a second layer inserted between the first layer and the substrate to hold liquid, the first layer containing a hydrophobic material and the second layer contains hydrophilic material. 10.
