The Biometric Submission System (BSS) relates to the technical field of thecapture andquality assessment of friction ridge impressions (i.e. prints) from humanfingers/palms/hands.A digital print image is captured using a livescan device or by scanning aninkedimpression of a person's finger(s)/palm/hand on a substrate.Print images to be submitted to databases must be of suitable quality forcomparisonand searching with matcher software. There are sometimes problems capturing prints of suitable quality withlivescan devices. The BSS includes.cndot. a livescan.cndot. a means of obtaining a digital image of inked prints and.cndot. a software program that assesses print image quality. If a print image captured by livescan has insufficient quality, the same printis alsocaptured by inking and scanning. The quality of the inked and scanned image iscompared to the livescan image, and the higher quality image is selected forsubmissionto a database.
