PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope apparatus including a highly-reliable shape detection function.SOLUTION: The endoscope apparatus includes an endoscope having a flexible insertion tube, and a bending shape detection sensor. The bending shape detection sensor includes an optical fiber for transmitting detection light, and a detection object part provided at least at a part of the optical fiber. The bending shape of the insertion tube is detected based on a fact that, when the optical fiber is bent, a characteristic of the detection light is changed by passing through the detection object part in response to the bending shape of the optical fiber. The optical fiber is disposed on a bending axis of the insertion tube or a vicinity area thereof when the insertion tube is bent in a prescribed bending direction.【課題】信頼性の高い形状検出機能を備えた内視鏡装置を提供することを目的とする。【解決手段】本発明の一実施形態の内視鏡装置は、可撓性の挿入管を有する内視鏡と、湾曲形状検出センサとを具備する。湾曲形状検出センサは、検出光を伝搬する光ファイバと、光ファイバの少なくとも一部に設けられた被検出部とを有し、光ファイバの湾曲時に光ファイバの湾曲形状の変化に応じて被検出部を経た検出光の特性が変化することに基づいて挿入管の湾曲形状を検出する。光ファイバは、挿入管が所定の湾曲方向に湾曲する際の挿入管の湾曲軸上又はその近傍領域に配置されている。【選択図】図４
