A blood pump system, comprising: a blood pump; and, a control system for monitoring the blood pump system and modifying the operation of the blood pump to maintain an increased average wall shear stress within the artery or vein that is fluidly connected to the blood pump. 2. The blood pump system according to claim 1, wherein the blood pump is a rotary blood pump. The blood pump system according to claim 1, wherein the blood pump is a centrifugal blood pump. The blood pump system according to claim 1, wherein the blood pump system further comprises one or more tubes in order to carry blood to or from the blood pump. The blood pump system according to claim 1, wherein the system is configured to maintain an increased average shear stress near the wall for at least 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days, 42 days, or 84 days. The blood pump system according to claim 1, where the system is configured to maintain an average shear stress near the wall inside the vein in the range from 0.76 to 23 Pa or from 2.5 to 10 Pa.
