The formulation is in the form of a double-layered, three-layer or coated tablet, wherein one or more compartments contain the active ingredient Nitrofurantoin, while the other compartments do not contain the active ingredient. The combination of compartments, through the use of certain excipients, imparts swelling properties, with consequent increased retention at the gastric level, favoring the desired release profile.
