To provide a hand-held, fully electrically self-powered and controlled surgical stapler with a manual release function that allows recovery from a partial actuation or a jam.SOLUTION: An electrically-powered surgical instrument comprises a surgical end effector having an actuation assembly operable to effect a surgical procedure when being actuated, and a handle connected to the end effector to operate the assembly. The actuation assembly has an electrically-powered motor, and a controller electrically connected to a power source and the motor. The controller selectively operates the motor. A transmission mechanically connects the motor to a movable part, and selectively displaces the movable part at any point between a starting position and a fully-extended position when the motor is operated.
