The present invention provides genetically modified plants having increased tolerance to environmental abiotic stress, particularly to salt stress and water stress (drought). The tolerant genetically modified plants of the invention include transgenic plants overexpressing at least one inositol polyphosphate 5 -phosphatase selected from 5TPase7 5TPase9 and plants having altered expression of the Endonuclease/Exonuclease/Phosphatase (EEP) protein ZEEP1.Cette invention concerne des plantes génétiquement modifiées chez qui la tolérance au stress abiotique environnemental est accrue, notamment le stress salin et le stress hydrique (sécheresse). Les plantes génétiquement modifiées tolérantes selon linvention comprennent des plantes transgéniques surexprimant au moins une inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase (choisie parmi 5TPase7, 5TPase9) et des plantes chez qui lexpression de la protéine endonucléase/exonucléase/phosphatase (EEP) ZEEP1 est modifiée.
