Methods are provided for treating a skin disorder, eg, acne, eg, acne vulgaris, in a subject. The method includes administering, eg, applying, eg, topical administration, to the surface of the subject an ammonia oxidizing bacterium, eg, a preparation comprising ammonia oxidizing bacterium. Also provided are preparations comprising ammonia oxidizing bacteria for treating such skin disorders in a subject, such as acne, eg acne vulgaris.
