The guide member system 10 includes guide members 50, 200 and 400, light sources 302 and 502, and detectors 306 and 506. The guide member includes at least one illumination fiber (56, 208, 407, 408). The at least one illumination fiber transmits light projected by the light source in a distal direction from the proximal end of the guide member to the distal end of the guide member. The distal end of the guide member projects the transmitted light in the distal direction. The distal end of the guide member receives light that is projected from the distal end of the guide member and is reflected back toward the distal end of the guide member. The at least one illumination fiber transmits the reflected light in a proximal direction from the distal end of the guide member to the proximal end of the guide member. The proximal end of the guide member projects the transmitted light in the proximal direction towards the detector.
