Various systems generating nitric oxideare disclosed herein. According to one embodiment, the system includes a first gas source providingnitrogen dioxide mixed in air or oxygen, and a second gassource supplying compressed air and/or compressedoxygen. The system also includes a ventilator coupledto the first and second gas sources, wherein theventilator is resistant to nitrogen dioxide. The ventilatorregulates gas flow and allows for the adjustment ofnitrogen dioxide concentration in the gas flow. Thesystem further includes one or more conversion devicesoperably coupled to the ventilator where theconversion devices convert nitrogen dioxide into nitric oxide.A patient interface delivers nitric oxide to the patientand is operably coupled to the conversion devices. Thesystem allows oxygen and nitric oxide levels to bevaried independently.
