A slit lamp mounted eye imaging device for viewing wide field and/or magnifiedviews of the retina or the anteriorsegment through an undilated or dilated pupil. The apparatus images posteriorand anterior segments of the eye, and sections/focalplanes in between and contains an illumination system that uses one or moreLEDs, shifting optical elements, and/or aperturestops where the light can be delivered into the optical system on optical axisor off axis from center of optical system and returnimaging path from the retina, thereby creating artifacts in differentlocations on retina. Image processing is employed to detect andeliminate artifacts from images. The device is well suited for retinal imagingthrough an undilated pupil, non-pharmacologicallydilated,or a pupil as small as 2mm. Two or more images with reflectionartifacts can be created and subsequently recombinedthrough image processing into a composite artifact- free image.
