There is disclosed a release mechanism (10) for releasing a medical device, the release mechanism comprising a generally elongate shaft (12) defining a longitudinal axis, an actuating member (18) receivable in the elongate shaft (12), the actuating member (18) having an interlocking position and a releasing position, and at least two, mutually opposed arms (20, 30) at a distal end of the elongate shaft (12), the arms being biased to open relative to each other, each arm (20, 30) comprising a gripping portion (42, 43) at a distal end thereof, and at least one interlocking member (23, 33), wherein the gripping portions (42, 43) of the arms (20, 30) at least partially define a hollow space for holding a medical device to be released, the interlocking member (23, 33) of each arm (20, 30) is longitudinally spaced from the interlocking member (23, 33) of any other arm (20, 30), each interlocking member (23, 33) extends circumferentially around a sufficient proportion of the actuating member (18) such that, when the actuating member (18) is in the interlocking position, opening of the arms (20, 30) is prevented by interaction between the actuating member (18) and the interlocking members (23, 33), and the actuating member (18) is longitudinally retractable from the interlocking position to the releasing position to enable the arms (20, 30) to open for releasing a medical device from the gripping portions (42, 43). There is also disclosed a method of manufacturing a release mechanism (10) for releasing a medical device and a method of releasing a medical device at a release location within a body.
