Compositions and methods are disclosed for preventing or reducing loss of color from color-treated keratin fibers by forming a water-resistant coating on hair comprise a combination of a hydrophobic particulate material comprising a hydrophobically surface-modified oxide and one or more hydrophobic film formers in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle. The compositions provide protection against color fading which may last through repeated hair washings.
