The method and system provide a multifocal ophthalmic device. The ophthalmic lens has at least one diffractive structure including a front surface, a back surface, and a plurality of echelettes. The echelette has at least one wavelength and at least one step height less than or equal to two wavelengths within the optical path length. A diffractive structure is on at least one of the front and back surfaces.
