The present invention discloses a wound dressing with high absorption capacity and the method of manufacturing. The wound dressing is a knitted fabric comprising of a fluffy layer of gelling fibres and a layer of non-gelling fibres as the backing. The said gelling fibres are knitted onto the backing structure and the length fluffy fibre outside the backing structure is between 1-100 mm, preferably 5-50 mm. The wound dressing can be used to manage chronic wounds such as venous stasis ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers and other chronic ulcer wounds
