A solution including an antimicrobial polymer having the structure of Formula(I) in which R1 is aC2-C7 alkyl; R2 is a C8-C15 alkyl; R5a is a or OH and R5b is OR6, or R5b is aor OH and R5a is OR6,R3, R4 and R6 are each independently a C1-C4 alkyl; Hal- is a halide anionselected from the groupconsisting of bromide (Br-), chloride (CI-) and iodide (I-); f, i, j, k and Iare each independently aninteger from 1 to 100; g is an integer from 0 to 100; the ratio of j:1 is fromabout 1:1 to 19:1; and0.1 <; j/(g + j + I) <; 1.0; in a polar solvent; and a method of producing thesolution; are provided. The quaternary ammonium salt moieties in the polymer provides it withantimicrobial activity. Theantimicrobial coating solution may be coated onto a substrate such as atextile and cured toprovide an antimicrobial substrate in which the polymer is covalently bondedto the substrate sothat it cannot leach from the substrate.(see formula I)
