A proximity detection apparatus for a control unit for use in controlling amedical device, the proximity detection apparatus comprising: a detecting partand an emitting part,- one part being located in the medical device and theother part in the control unit, so that when the control unit is attached tothe medical device the detecting part detects the emitting part and instructsthe control unit to select a first mode of operation and when the control unitis detached from the medical device, the detecting part does not detect theemitting part and instructs the control unit to select a second mode ofoperation. Examples of the first mode are: -control unit is able to operatethe device, - control, unit operates in a patient mode. Examples of the secondmode are: -control unit is de-activated, -control unit operates in ahealthcare professional mode -control unit displays data of the usage of themedical device and/or patience compliance data.
