The device (100) has sensor device (20) having three sensors (21,22,23) whose outputs are correlated with liquid level in liquid reservoir (11), ambient temperature of plant and light intensity in plant surrounding. A control unit (30) senses liquid levels in liquid reservoir for acquiring ambient temperatures of plant and light intensities in plant surrounding to determine emptying rate. The control unit determines dry period duration as function of emptying rate, ambient temperatures and light intensities by detecting liquid level less than or equal to reference level.
