A dental appliance and a method of treatment are disclosed. The dental appliance is attached to a predetermined tooth of a patient's maxilla and includes a restraining mechanism of a shape disposed on the tongue of the patient to limit movement of the rear region of the patient's tongue. The restraint mechanism allows at least the anterior region and lateral edges of the patient's tongue to perform the exercises necessary for speech and swallowing.
