PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved spinal implant assembly for implantation into vertebrae.SOLUTION: The polyaxial bone screw assembly includes a receiver 10, a shank 4, an articulation structure 12 for retaining the shank 4 in the receiver 10 and a compression insert 18 for engagement with a longitudinal connecting member such as a rod 21. The articulation structure 12 includes substantially spherical convex and concave surfaces that slidably engage both surfaces of the shank 4 and the receiver 10 to provide compound articulation between the receiver 10 and the shank 4.
