A process is disclosed for the efficient recovery of oil from oilseed materialswithout the use of organic solvents. In the process, the oilseed starting materialis first expelled to remove a portion of the total oil. The expelled cake retainsthe remainder of the oil from the starting seed. This cake is slurried in waterand the pH of the slurry is adjusted to pH >; 8 with an alkaline compound. ThispH adjustment results in release of oil from binding to other compounds and structuresin the slurry. The slurry is then processed through a solids-liquid separationto produce a protein-enriched solids phase and an oil-in- water liquid phase. The liquid phase is then further processed to separate the oil from the water andrecover the oil as free oil. The recovered oil can then be added to the expelledoil.
