The present invention relates to a method and a product that enables the producers of ovenable food items, such as for example ovenable snacks, that need to have a crispy surface after heating in an oven or for example in an air-fryer, to supply such products without having to install frying equipment in their facilities for a pre-frying operation that would normally be required in order to obtain the desired crispy end result. The method according to the invention comprises pre-frying of the coating material, thus enabling a food product to obtain a pre-fried coating without having to pre-fry the food item as a whole. The pre-fried coating material can be applied to the food items.
