Disclosed is a crystalline modification IV of fipronil which has an X-ray powder diffraction pattern, recorded using Cu-Ka radiation at 25 degrees Cesius, with at least four of the following peaks at two degrees theta: 7.8, 9.8, 11.6, 13.7, 16.8, 19.3, 24.8, 29.4. Processes for preparing the above modification IV of fipronil is disclosed. Use of the composition for treating or controlling pests is also disclosed.
