A method for operating a medical device is described. The method includes theuse of afirst computer and a second computer and comprises the steps of accessinginformation related tothe identity of a patient from the second computer at a remote location,accessing informationregarding the identity of a medical treatment from the second computer, themedical treatmenthaving a treatment type, determining whether the medical treatment has beenpreviouslyassociated with the patient, providing a first error signal if the medicaltreatment has not beenpreviously identified with the patient, accessing information related to theidentity of a medicaldevice from the second computer, the medical device configured to administerthe medicaltreatment type, determining whether a plurality of operating parameters forthe medical device areconsistent with the medical treatment, the operating parameters having beenprovided from thefirst computer at a central computer, the operating parameters having beenprovided to themedical device without passing through the second computer, providing a seconderror signal ifthe operating parameters for the medical device are not consistent with themedical treatment,enabling the medical device to operate, and, verifying that the medical deviceis operating.
