Diagnostic method for providing information for a medical condition of a ROI in an intervertebral disc in a patient, the method comprising acquiring MRS data for a voxel located with the ROI and producing a processed MRS spectrum containing spectral peak regions corresponding with proteoglycan, lactate and alanine. A parameter is calculated from the spectrum, correlative for diagnosing the intervertebral disc as painful or non-painful.
