A pump mechanism (65) is connected to a prosthetic foot (114) and has a fluid chamber (22) in fluid communication with the prosthetic socket (102) during gait for drawing air from the prosthetic socket (102) in step phase, and expelling air into the atmosphere in swing phase. The vacuum assisted suspension results in secure and intimate suspension as the negative pressure formed inside the prosthetic socket (102) holds a residuum firmly to walls (105) of the prosthetic socket (102). The vacuum is preferably formed at the distal area of the prosthetic socket (102), and sealed by a seal component (106) of a suspension liner (104).
