Disclosed is a seed composition for conditioning soil, the composition comprising: at least one seed； at least one seed protective coating applied to the seed； and at least one soil surfactant coating applied to the seed protective coating, the soil surfactant coating comprising a surfactant formulated to increase wetability of soil in contact with the soil surfactant coating, the soil surfactant coating comprising a sufficient quantity of soil surfactant to treat the soil in contact with the soil surfactant such that the soil is conditioned for growing the seed, the seed protective coating formulated to keep the soil surfactant from contacting the seed, the seed protective coating positioned between the seed and the soil surfactant. Further disclosed is a method for preparing a seed composition, comprising: providing at least one seed； providing at least one seed protective coating； providing at least one soil surfactant coating； coating the at least one seed with the at least one seed protective coating； and subsequently coating the at least one seed with the at least one soil surfactant coating such that the at least one protective coating isolates the seed from the at least one soil surfactant coating. Further disclosed is a method for ameliorating water repellent soil and increasing water availability in wettable soil, comprising the steps of: providing a seed composition comprising at least one seed, at least one seed protective coating, and at least one soil surfactant coating wherein the at least one soil surfactant coating comprises at least one hydrophobic group and at least one hydrophilic group； placing the seed composition in contact with soil； and exposing the seed composition to water, such that the soil surfactant coating is released from the seed composition into the soil, improving moisture availability to the soil surrounding the seed composition.
