Provided is a device for temperature-controlled release of an active ingredient (AI) comprising a substrate and a shutter, the device being configured to expose the substrate to the atmosphere when the shutter is in an open position, and shield the substrate from the atmosphere when the shutter is in a closed position, wherein: the substrate comprises the AI and a matrix, the AI being able to diffuse from the matrix into the atmosphere above a temperature T1 and substantially not being able to diffuse from the matrix into the atmosphere below T1; the shutter comprises a heat-sensitive member and is configured to be in the closed position above a temperature T0 and at least partially in the open position between T1 and T0; and 1 T1 is less than T0.
