An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator and a surgical instrument which has an end-effector capable of several different operations, including grasping, cutting, and sealing and/or coagulating tissue, and one of the operations is controlled by a handle 22 that is moveable relative to the instrument so as to move the end effector between two conditions. The present invention provides a latching mechanism 326 for this moveable handle 22, which can be optionally employed or overridden by the user of the instrument. The response from the generator varies depending on whether the latch mechanism 326 is used or overridden.
