A communication system is provided for exchanging data between an actuator system and an external device, such as an operating device. Communication systems in the form of gateways and transcoders translate the information in the bi-directional data stream and distribute the information to both ends. The communication system further includes a logger function, and the signals sent to both sides of the gateway are stored in memory so that the movements and signals that led to the actuator changes can be reproduced later.
