A prosthetic valve assembly and methodof implanting same is disclosed. The prostheticvalve assembly includes a prosthetic valve formed bysupport frame and valve leaflets, with one or moretethers each having a first end secured to the supportframe and the second end attached to, or configuredfor attachment to, to papillary muscles or otherventricular tissue. The tether is configured and positionedso as to avoid contact or other interference withmovement of the valve leaflets, while at the same timeproviding a tethering action between the support frameand the ventricular tissue. The valve leaflets may beflexible (e.g., so-called tissue or synthetic leaflets) ormechanical.
