Systems and methods for providing a breathing gas are provided. A methodincludes sensing a sensed parameter associated with delivery of the breathinggas, changing acontrol parameter associated with a flow/pressure control element in responseto a differencebetween the sensed parameter and a first predetermined sensed parameter valueduring a firstportion of a breathing cycle, determining a transition from the first portionto a secondportion of the breathing cycle based at least in part on the changing controlparameter,changing the control parameter to cause a first change in the sensed parameterduring thesecond portion of the breathing cycle based at least in part on the determinedtransition, andchanging the control parameter to cause a second change in the sensedparameter during athird portion of the breathing cycle based at least in part on the firstpredetermined sensedparameter value.
