A sensor system for detecting a substance in a dialysate, comprising: a hydrophobic barrier configured to balance the substance in the dialysate with gas; a detector configured to detect gas; an interface located between the hydrophobic barrier and the detector and configured to provide hydraulic communication gas; iodine or several delivery mechanisms configured to transport gas from the hydrophobic barrier to the detector. 2. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein one or more delivery mechanisms provide a motive force capable of transporting gas from the hydrophobic barrier to the detector. The sensor system of claim 2, wherein the driving force circulates the gas within the interface. The sensor system of claim 2, wherein the driving force moves the gas back and forth within the interface. The sensor system according to any one of paragraphs. 2-4, further comprising electronic control means configured to control the driving force. 6.
