The present invention relates generally to a method for the prophylaxis andtreatment of infection by microorganisms in biological environments from wherethe microorganisms acquire iron, heme or porphyrin, generally but notexclusively for growth. Particular biological environments contemplated by thepresent invention include but are not limited to vascular regions and cavitiesas well as mucosal membranes in animals including mammals, reptiles,amphibians and fish and in avian species as well as hooves of livestockanimals. The method of the present invention involves interrupting, reducingor otherwise antagonizing the interaction between a microbial-derivedpolypeptide, such as but not limited to a polypeptide having cysteineproteinase activity, and a porphyrin-containing molecule in such as heme. Thepresent invention further provides agents useful in the prophylaxis andtreatment of microbial infection of biological environments such as vascularregions and cavities including mucosal membranes as well as hooves involvingmicrobial acquisition of iron, heme or porphyrin. Such agents are particularlyuseful as components in therapeutic compositions. Particularly importantmicrobial infections targeted by the present invention involve infections inthe oral cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, vagina and urethra in mammals suchas humans. Other important microbial infections including infections of hoovesin livestock animals such as sheep, cattle and goats.
